Lauded for her \u201crich, humane soprano\u201d (Opera Canada) and \u201cconvincing and poignant\u201d portrayals (Boston Musical Intelligencer), in the 25-26 season Canadian soprano Olivia Smith joins the ensemble of Theater St. Gallen. Her engagements there include Mim\u00ec in\u202f<\/span>La\u202fboh\u00e8me<\/span><\/i><\/b>, Fiordiligi in Mozart\u2019s\u202f<\/span>Cosi fan tutte<\/span><\/i><\/b> and Helena in Purcell\u2019s\u202f<\/span>The Fairy Queen<\/span><\/i><\/b>. She returns to the San Francisco Opera for her final performances in the prestigious Adler Fellowship Program, where she will be featured in Wagner\u2019s <\/span>Parsifal<\/span><\/i><\/b> and in their annual Gala Concert, performing operatic arias and ensembles.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In the 2024\u201325 season, while in her second year as an Adler Fellow, Olivia Smith debuted as Mica\u00ebla in the company\u2019s immersive\u202f<\/span>Carmen Encounter<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u202fand covered the role for mainstage performances. She also covered the role of Ilia in <\/span>Idomeneo<\/span><\/i><\/b> and appeared in numerous SFO concert programs. With the Philadelphia Opera, Smith made her company and role debut as Donna Anna in\u202f<\/span>Don Giovanni<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u202funder the baton of Corrado Rovaris, and was also heard in recital with pianist Grant Loenig. Additionally, she saw her first performances as Pamina in Opera Naples\u2019 production of <\/span>The Magic Flute<\/span><\/i><\/b>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In prior seasons with San Francisco Opera Olivia Smith was heard as Erste Dame in Mozart\u2019s\u202f<\/span>Die Zauberfl\u00f6te,<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u202fand in the critically praised portrayal of Chrisann Brennan in Mason Bates and Mark Campbell\u2019s\u202f<\/span>The (R)evolution of Steve Jobs<\/span><\/i><\/b>. She made her mainstage debut in spring 2023 as the Voice of the Falcon in Strauss\u2019\u202f<\/span>Die Frau ohne Schatten<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u202fand sang Mim\u00ec in SFO\u2019s\u202f<\/span>Boh\u00e8me Out of the Box<\/span><\/i><\/b>. A participant in the 2022 Merola Opera Program, she appeared there as Margarita Xirgu in scenes from Golijov\u2019s\u202f<\/span>Ainadamar<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u202fand as Le\u00efla in excerpts from Bizet\u2019s\u202f<\/span>Les p\u00eacheurs de perles<\/span><\/i><\/b>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music, Smith performed the Governess in Britten\u2019s\u202f<\/span>The Turn of the Screw<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u202fwith Curtis Opera Theater and Marguerite in excerpts of Gounod\u2019s\u202f<\/span>Faust<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u202f<\/span><\/b>with the Curtis Symphony Orchestra. Additional roles include Cathleen in Vaughan Williams\u2019\u202f<\/span>Riders to the Sea<\/span><\/i><\/b>, the First Witch in Purcell\u2019s\u202f<\/span>Dido and Aeneas<\/span><\/i><\/b>, and Mrs.\u202fGobineau in Menotti\u2019s\u202f<\/span>The Medium<\/span><\/i><\/b>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Olivia Smith has been recognized by Houston Grand Opera\u2019s Eleanor McCollum Competition, receiving both the Ana Mar\u00eda Mart\u00ednez Encouragement Award and the Online Viewers\u2019 Choice Award. She won First Prize in Opera Grand Rapids\u2019 VanderLaan Prize competition and received an encouragement grant from the George and Nora London Foundation for Singers.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
