His signature roles include Bluebeard <em>(<strong>Bluebeard&#8217;s Castle<\/strong>),<\/em> Nick Shadow <em>(<strong>The Rake\u2019s Progress<\/strong>), <\/em>Claggart <em>(<strong>Billy Budd<\/strong>)<\/em>, Kaspar (<strong><em>Der Freisch\u00fctz<\/em><\/strong>), Don Pizarro (<strong><em>Fidelio<\/em><\/strong>) and Scarpia (<strong><em>Tosca<\/em><\/strong>). He is a regular guest at many of the world\u2019s most prestigious opera houses including Deutsche Oper Berlin, Festival d&#8217;Aix-en-Provence, Komische Oper Berlin, Op\u00e9ra National de Paris, Bergen National Opera, Washington National Opera and Teatro La Fenice.<\/p>\n<p>In the 2024\/25 season, Gidon Saks reprises the roles of Priam\/Alexander in Bernard Foccroulle\u2019s <strong><em>Cassandra<\/em><\/strong> at Staatsoper Berlin under the baton of Anja Bihlmaier.<\/p>\n<p>In the 2023\/24 season, Gidon Saks sang the roles of Priam\/Alexander in the world premiere of Bernard Foccroulle\u2019s <strong><em>Cassandra<\/em><\/strong> at Brussels&#8217; La Monnaie conducted by Kazushi \u014cno. The Bass also took on the role of Daland in Wagner\u2019s <strong><em>The Flying Dutchman<\/em><\/strong> at Turin&#8217;s Teatro Regio Torino, conducted by Nathalie\u00a0Stutzmann and staged by Willy Decker.<\/p>\n<p>Recent highlights include King of France in Calixto Bieto\u2019s production of Reimann\u2019s <strong><em>Lear<\/em><\/strong> with Op\u00e9ra National de Paris; Pangloss in Bernstein\u2019s <strong><em>Candide<\/em><\/strong> with Bergen National Opera; John Claggart in multiple productions of Britten\u2019s <strong><em>Billy Budd<\/em><\/strong>, including by David Alden and Annilese Miskimmon; his first Orest in <strong><em>Elektra<\/em><\/strong> for Bordeaux; the title role in Robert Carsen\u2019s production of Battistelli\u2019s <strong><em>Richard III<\/em><\/strong> for La Fenice (winner of the Abbiati Prize for best production in Italy); the Villains in Offenbach\u2019s <strong><em>Les contes d\u2019Hoffmann<\/em><\/strong> for the Royal Danish Opera; reprising the role of Bottom in Britten\u2019s <strong><em>A Midsummer Night\u2019s Dream<\/em><\/strong> for the Festival d&#8217;Aix-en-Provence at the Beijing Music Festival; and the title role in Bartok\u2019s <strong><em>Bluebeard\u2019s Castle<\/em><\/strong> with both Teatro La Fenice and Concerto Budapest and Andr\u00e1s Keller, opposite Petra Lang as Judith.<\/p>\n<p>Equally in demand on the concert platform, Saks has performed Creon in <strong><em>Oedipus Rex<\/em><\/strong> and Hermit in <strong><em>Der Freisch\u00fctz<\/em><\/strong> with the London Symphony Orchestra (both recorded for LSO Live); King Marke in <strong><em>Tristan und Isolde<\/em><\/strong> at Festival de Opera de Coru\u00f1a; K\u00f6nig Heinrich in <strong><em>Lohengrin<\/em><\/strong> with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. He has worked with some of the most distinguished conductors of our time including Sir John Eliot Gardiner, Valery Gergiev, Donald Runnicles, Sir Neville Marriner, Daniel Harding, Sir Andrew Davies and the late Sir Colin Davis.<\/p>\n<p>Saks can be heard in recording, including Abbott in <strong><em>Curlew River<\/em><\/strong> (Philips); the Gravedigger in Weill\u2019s <strong><em>Silbersee<\/em><\/strong> (BMG); the title role in Handel\u2019s <strong><em>Hercules <\/em><\/strong>conducted by Minkowski (Deutsche Grammophon); Handel\u2019s <strong><em>Saul<\/em><\/strong> with Rene Jacobs, which won a Gramophone Award. Saks has also recorded John Claggart in Britten\u2019s <strong><em>Billy Budd<\/em><\/strong> with the London Symphony Orchestra, which won a Grammy Award for the Best Opera Performance, and Sch\u00f6nberg\u2019s <strong><em>Gurre-lieder<\/em><\/strong> with the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Susanna M\u00e4lkki.<\/p>\n<p>Saks was born in Israel and brought up in South Africa. He trained at the Royal Northern College of Music, University of Toronto and subsequently Zurich Opera Studio. He was a visiting Professor of Voice at the Conservatoire of Ghent in Belgium.
